Good and Bad Foods for Guinea Pigs


On top of the list of vegetables that are perfect for these animals is the celery especially the leaves which are six times richer in Vitamin C than its roots. However, you should be cautious when feeding them celery, do your research on how much celery can guinea pigs eat. Other leafy vegetables are also suitable for food such as spinach, turnip greens, parsley, kale, chopped stems of broccoli, chicory, parsnips, cucumber, and others.

Cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and collards should be avoided or consumed in limited amounts because they produce gas in the digestive tract. Guinea Pigs are known to be incapable of passing gas and eating these vegetables might cause them to bloat. Avoid starchy vegetables as well like potatoes as they can be poisonous and harmful to them. Other vegetables to be avoided are mushrooms, rhubarb, hot peppers and celery.


Apricots, apples, blueberries, oranges, bananas, grapes, strawberries, watermelon and even tomatoes are good for Guinea Pigs as they are very nutritious and also rich in Vitamin C.

Avocado is not an ideal fruit as well as raisins and other fruits that are frozen, canned, cooked, and preserved. Fruits should be fed to them fresh.


Grasses are the natural food of Guinea Pigs so make sure to keep them available. Grass and hay fibers are very essential for their digestive system and for keeping their teeth to their normal lengths.


Pellets especially those that are enriched with Vitamin C should also be a part of their daily diet. However, proper storage should be observed because Vitamin C can lose its potency over time if not properly stored.

These food listing should serve as your guide in feeding your Guinea Pigs. Remember that in feeding, anything in excess will have a bad effect on them. Strict moderation is very important. Like when you feed them celery, one leaf is enough for a day; otherwise, the calcium content of this vegetable can cause bladder stone. The same is true with other types of food; each one may have a harmful effect on them if given in excess.
